For naturalization in Costa Rica it must be met the requirements of either of the types of pre-existing Naturalization:
  • Naturalization by marriage:2 years of marriage to a Costa Rican. It requires to have lived in Costa Rica for the same period
  • Residency Naturalization:5-7 years as a legal resident in Costa Rica. Applicant cannot apply for this naturalization with temporary work permits or study permits.
  • Naturalization by Permanence:more than 20 years of living in Costa Rica
  • Nationality by ascendancy:Children of Costa Rican parents born abroad with 25 years or older. The applicant should have lived in Costa Rica 5-7 years.

General requirements to be brought from the origin country:

  • Apostilled birth certificate issued in the country of origin.
  • Criminal Record Certificate with apostille issued in the country of origin or in the country where the applicant has lived the last years abroad. Validity of the document three months.
  • Translation of all documents in foreign languages into Spanish.
