HOW TO OBTAIN THE RESIDENCY IN COSTA RICA? DETERMINE YOUR ELIGIBILITY TO LIVE IN COSTA RICA.

Our lawyers will professionally advise you verifying your eligibility for residency in our country. In Costa Rica residencies are, in general terms, divided in four categories:

1 Due to family ties with a Costa Rican or a resident (spouse, siblings or minor children, parents)
2. Due to incomes: - Annuitant $60,000 in a national bank or $2,500 per month for at least two years.- Investor: Based on one investment of at least $200,000 dollars. - Pension or retirement fund at least $1,000 monthly.
 3. The third major group is dedicated to manpower force. Under these regimes Costa Rican companies or individuals can apply for work permits for foreign employees. Only the employers can apply for this type of residency. There are many types of working permits but few of them have a positive resolution. There is a special procedure for corporations already recognized by the immigration department by which these companies may ask for permits for their workers under expedited procedures.
4. Student Permits. Special category for people who want to study in Costa Rica, such permits cannot ever become residency or naturalization.

  •  Bring the Apostilled birth certificate of the applicant and all family members in the country of origin.
  • Bring an apostilled criminal record certificate of all applicants or family members over 18 years.

NATURALIZATION IN COSTA RICA

For naturalization in Costa Rica it must be met the requirements of either of the types of pre-existing Naturalization:
  • Naturalization by marriage:2 years of marriage to a Costa Rican. It requires to have lived in Costa Rica for the same period
  • Residency Naturalization:5-7 years as a legal resident in Costa Rica. Applicant cannot apply for this naturalization with temporary work permits or study permits.
  • Naturalization by Permanence:more than 20 years of living in Costa Rica
  • Nationality by ascendancy:Children of Costa Rican parents born abroad with 25 years or older. The applicant should have lived in Costa Rica 5-7 years.

General requirements to be brought from the origin country:

  • Apostilled birth certificate issued in the country of origin.
  • Criminal Record Certificate with apostille issued in the country of origin or in the country where the applicant has lived the last years abroad. Validity of the document three months.
  • Translation of all documents in foreign languages into Spanish.
